Breakfast at the hotel . After a short city tour of Negombo , we headed to Sigiriya. In the late afternoon we arrive at Lion Rock or the Rock of Sigiriya , an amazing feat of engineering and construction from the 5th century that has become one of the oldest tourist attractions in the world. The most striking part of Sigiriya is this terracotta rock that rises 200 meters above a forested plain, at the summit of which lies the ruins of a royal citadel dating back to the 5th century. A series of moats, walls and water gardens , remains of an ancient city, are scattered on both sides of the rock. The remains of a pair of gigantic paws of a lion carved in stone still await at the foot of the staircase that takes us to the top, from where we enjoy extraordinary views of the jungle. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, Sigiriya is Asia's best-preserved city of the first millennium, displaying complex urban planning around the bedrock, combined with sophisticated engineering and irrigation work in the palace perched on top.
